Detail

Coaching for growth is a one day couse designed to help support workers discuss and explore how business coaching techniques can be used to help clients prepare for specific challenges ie moving into their own home or preparing for a job.

Coaching teaches that everyone has ability and that it is the job of an effective coach to tutor, train and give hints to how they can uncover this and fulfil their potential. In coaching, much like support work, the coach doesn’t tell someone what to do but coaches people to discover it for themselves.

IYM believes that effective coaching is at the heart of all good support work and underpins a number of models for interaction including solution based therapy and motivational interviewing but is more:

focused: Coaching usually focuses on one particular issues in contrast to good support work which is holistic.

flexible: It is particularly relevant for staff/volunteers who do not have a key work relationship with clients i.e. through day centre/street outreach services

affirmative: In contrast to other techniques coaching is a distinct tool which should be offered and accepted by the client. It is an affirmative action

By the end of the two days training support workers will be able to:

• Understand what coaching is and how it differs from other assisted learning processes

• Understand the G.R.O.W model of coaching

• Know the principle goal setting tools for coaching

• Understand the risk management responsibilities of a coach

• Understand the key theories and underlying causes which are the main indicators of organisational change

• Understand the established theories of employee resistance to organisational change

• Be able to understand the coachee’s perspective to their work

• Understand the boundaries of the Coach-Client relationship

Coaching for Growth is offered as a Level 3 OCN qualification

“This course was really interesting. It will definitely give me another tool to use with candidates who are sick  and tired of support workers”
