Establishing Boundaries is a one day course designed to help support workers discuss and explore the daily challenge of maintaining professional boundaries with clients.
The course aims to provide a safe environment in which staff can share their experience without fear or recrimination of judgement. Central to the course is the understanding that, professional boundaries are essential when:
supporting housing related support staff: many staff work in supported housing because of what they deem to be good inter personal skills or a motivation to help. Without clear professional boundaries staff can easily question their own motivation and character when following procedure. It is essential managers allow time for reflection
building relationships with new clients: For many clients the time they spend in supported accommodation may the most secure period they have had in their life. To ensure clients feel safe a service must be seen to have clear and consistent practice. Consistency reassures clients
reducing risk in a service: support workers should be aware of the impact that unprofessional relationships can have on them, their clients and the service’s liability as a whole.
By the end of the two days training support workers will be able to:
• Identify, assess and better manage professional boundaries as a support worker
• Manager and implement a co-ordinated approach to boundaries collectively in their project, scheme or organisations
