Contraception means stopping pregnancy before it starts or in the very early stages of being pregnant. Some of the ways in which it is done also protect against STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections). There are different types of contraception. You can find information about them here: http://www.sexualhealthbirmingham.co.uk/default.asp?page=356

If you are sexually active, it is important to get tested regularly for STIs so that you and your partner(s) are as safe as possible. You can get tested for STIs at a range of different places including some G.P. surgeries, sexual health and contraception clinics. GUM (Genitourinary Medicine Clinic) clinics are there especially to provide these tests and provide advice and information. Tests are free but you may have to pay for treatments on prescriptions. You can find local sexual health clinics here:

Most people in the UK can get free contraception. For information on how to find it, visit:

The ‘c:card’ scheme offers a way to get free condoms from the most convenient c:card point for you. You can get more information about it here: www.ccard.org.uk
